The best way to rate a mexican restaurant is to sample the chile rellenos. Anybody can slop together a burrito or a plate of carne asada tacos (and dont get me wrong, I Iove sloppy burittos and whole-in-the-wall taqueria food), but the chile relleno in the place is the best I have had, ever. And I mean ever! I only gave it 4 stars because I have eaten there 3 times and had the chile rellenos all three times (I couldnt help myself). But like I said above, if they can make good chile rellenos, I am sure they can handle the rest. Did I mention the chile rellenos?

Waitress was rude and seemed like she wanted to fight my GF. Margaritas had NO alcohol and lots of corn syrup. Burrito was good Tacos are weird and bad. Don't ask for a substitution unless u want spit in your food....

I've been ignoring this restaurant due to my utter, frequent disappointments in the pathetic state of affairs with regards to Mexican restaurants in this town. But after a great lunch yesterday, I'll be back soon because (1) I think I could get used to warm salsa and (2) as others have mentioned, the beer battered chili rellenos are out. of. this. world ~!~ Like no other. Next time I'll have several. Perfectly fresh al dente chili, loaded inside, crisped like I've never had. Service was also just as delicious. Yea, it's more Tex-Mex oriented but I wasn't disappointed in the least.

Unique & tasty food. Not in an artsy way, just unique. Always a nice atmosphere whether crowed or not. Try it, I think you'll like it. Definitely ask for suggestions from the staff if you feel compelled, they appear to know the food well. We've been eating here for 15 yrs or so and it is one of our favorite Mexican food places in Fort Collins.

Great, fresh food! We love all of the specials they have here. Have not had one bad meal yet and we have gone many times. The service is always great and the warm salsa is addicting!

I actually used to eat here about ten years ago and returned, after a bad experience at another Mexican place in Ft. Collins. I stayed safe with the chimichanga. The green chili was excellent. The chimi was good as well, although for the price I thought it was a little bit small. The salsa was VERY good. Overall I was happy with the experience.

What is amazing Mexican food to you? Is it spicy freshness? Is it soothing familiar comfort? Is it simple flavors combined to create a distinctive tastes? Is it memories of family recipes? There are so many reasons that make Mexican food a favorite cuisine, and it's often more subjective than other food styles based on the different types of regional twists. For me, amazing Mexican food, no matter the region, is robust with flavor. Loaded with different layers of taste - rich, smoky, fresh, spicy - each ingredient is an integral part of the mix in creating the distinct palatableness. These are the things that I think about when eating at a Mexican restaurant. With each bite, I want to taste a fiesta, not a siesta. Tortilla Marissa's, established in 1987, serves Tex-Mex style dishes rather than authentic Mexican cuisine. Located on South College and Drake, the building is pretty fun and funky. I actually love the atmosphere here - brightly colored decor and cool silver light fixtures - even if it's kitschy, as some may think. As you walk through the front door, you can't miss the entryway that is plastered with articles, reviews and awards they have received throughout the many years. With acclaims of "Best Mexican Restaurant 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 you're pretty sure you're about to eat that amazing food that is robust with flavor. But, you don't. Not all Mexican food has to be "authentic" to be considered really good - it just has to be jam packed with flavor - none of which I found at Tortilla Marissa's. It was pretty average for winning so many awards five years straight for being the best Mexican restaurant in Fort Collins. With each bite, I tasted siesta more than fiesta.

I'm not really sure why this place has so many poor reviews? It's my favorite Mexican place in Fort Collins, and we always have great service and yummy food. I've received poor service and food from both the Rio and Pueblo Viejo on multiple occasions, so when a friend told me about Tortilla Marissa's, I gave it a shot and it's our new favorite Mexican place! I think everyone has different tastes, but I feel like the food is very flavorful and pleasing to a wide audience (I'm vegetarian and love all their veggie options; my husband loves their large portions and real meat fajitas--a hunk of actual steak rather than bitty pieces of beef). We've brought guests here who all went home with happy, full bellies. If you haven't been here, give it a shot It may not be 100% authentic, but the service is great, food is great, and it's a fun atmosphere!

You can't go wrong! The warm salsa is a unique touch different to everywhere else. The atmosphere is warm, upbeat, and inviting. The comics on the bathroom walls make me smile. The patio is the best in the city on a warm summer evening. The fajitas are to die for. And the ice cream nachos are ridiculously tasty. One of the best establishments in Northern Colorado!

This place is a plus for New Mexican food up in No. Co! Both friends had the chimichangas and I had the special- soft tacos but I substituted vege style minus the bell peppers. Both the vege and the meaty chimis were nice and flavorful. They have a thick and spicy vegetarian chili (they have a less spicy pork version as well). Their standard salsa was the warm chunky kind, but ask for the hot one instead if you like heat - it has a real nice garlic undertones with the spice. Previous times they had the chili rellenos and they said they were amazing. Downside: The rice and beans were just average not flavorfull, but the rest makes up for those (they were tasty once I doused them with the vegetarian green chili lol). The rest of the plates around looked equally great, also their specialty being the chili rellenos. They also have a marg section that looked good for lunch rates as well but we didn't have any. This was during lunch rush and the service was great, they also kept the chips and drinks flowing nicely without ever asking. Friends said service was good the previous times as well. They have dessert nachos that look yummy but we were too stuffed to try!

I was born & raised in FoCo and every time I go back, there are a few places I HAVE to visit. Tortilla Marissa's is definitely one of them! I love the warm salsa and I can't start my meal without a raspberry margarita (on the rocks). Though I have never had a meal I didn't like, my favorite by far is the Enchiladas de la Casa. Rich, creamy goodness that I have tried to copy at home on my own but can't quite master. Though I'm only home once a year, I still recognize the same servers when I go back. The service is always awesome and you can tell that everyone in that building is invested in the quality of their food and the happiness of their guests.

Haven't been here for years, but just went for lunch with coworkers. Outdoor patio in the back is nice and part-shaded. Plastic chairs are a bit uncomfortable but serviceable. Service was good, waiter kept up on our drink refills and was timely about everything else. Free chips and salsa, the chips were crisp and the salsa was good, not too spicy but not too bland for my taste. I had the anaheim relleno with cheese. The pepper tasted fresh, was not too heavily battered, and there was a lot of cheese inside. The refried beans were good, you could taste the fresh onion in them and they were thicker, not runny as some restaurants serve. The Spanish rice was cooked well but a little dry and a little bland for my taste. Everyone else seemed to enjoy the food, the lunch salad was mixed greens and not iceberg lettuce, so that is a plus. I would go back to try some other offerings in the future.

We love this place. I've been frequenting Tortilla Marissa's since I was a kid, and have yet to be disappointed. Their salsa is delicious- we do prefer to order it cold however, since they usually serve it hot. I always order the chile rellenos, which are one of their specialties, and are wonderful. We love supporting local businesses, and Tortilla Marissa's is one we are glad to return to over and over.

The chips and salsa were pretty good, but from there the meal went south. My girlfriend and I are new to town and really hope this isn't a sign of what food is like out here. It doesn't matter if it is labeled as "mexican" or "north of the border" we just want it to taste good. Pros on our visit were quick friendly service and nice atmosphere. Cons: very bland food.

    (2)
  • Lauren C.

This place is horrible in so many different ways. First of all, the staff is very rude and unfriendly. The salsa tastes like tomato sauce. Gross. I ordered the enchilada lunch special and there was only one enchilada with no flavor. I could've made better at home! They somehow made their black beans disgusting... And finally, I ordered my food to go. Their containers have holes in them and made a mess in my car. If this place were in California, it'd go out of business right away. Unfortunately they somehow have a decent location and that is probably saving them.

Service: 5 Food: 3.5 Atmosphere: 4 If you're craving Mexican food and not looking for anything special, you can't go wrong with Tortilla Marissa. Their most popular dish is the Roasted Signature Chile Rellenos; a very mild dish with very traditional flavors. The stuffed chile's come with a side of Mexican rice & beans that are very bland and lack flavor. The chile's themselves are very delicious, with a bit of a crunch they offer a lot of flavor. Overall there is nothing overly special or unique about this restaurant. I would recommend this place if you are looking for somewhere causal and reasonably priced.

Time to kick it up a notch TM. I have visited Tortilla Marissa's several times over the last 10+ years. A few years ago I would have said 5 stars. The last couple of visits have been no bueno. Today I ordered a steak burrito and got ground beef. I didn't want rice or beans and got both. The 'house specialty' relleno has gone downhill a lot. This place holds a lot of great memories for me but sadly I think it's time we broke up.

    (2)
  • Blaine H.

We were disappointed by this restaurant. The beef in both my burrito and my wife's tacos was dry. The tortillas were gummy. The food seemed as though it wasn't cooked fresh. After a $45 bill for 4 of us (2 adults and 2 kids) I wasn't very happy with the food we got. Maybe we'll try again sometime, but not likely...

    (2)
  • J B.

As usual the patio was great. Friendly service. The rellenos really hit the spot. Especially with the Coopersmiths Green Chile beer!

  • Kristi K.

I haven't been here for about three years. Used to really enjoy the food. This used to be my mom's favorite restaurant in Fort Collins. We visited last night and were very disappointed. We ordered the smoked chicken rellenos and the chicken was tougher than a board and the green chile was bland and flavorless. Bummer!

    (2)
  • Nichole L.

I love that they serve the salsa warm. I've never had it that way, but thought it was excellent. Service was fantastic. I ordered shrimp tacos and they were delicious. The mango salsa had the perfect mixture of spice and flavor. My husband ordered chilie rellanos and said they were perfect, and he would know as Chile rellanos are his favorite. Definitely worth your time.

  • Elle I.

The only things that are good about this restaurant are the service and the chips and salsa. I ordered a steak "build your own burrito" I counted how many pieces of steak there were in the burrito, there were five, yes FIVE pieces of steak in an $11 burrito. The rest was lukewarm rice and beans. A 12 inch long burrito had only five pieces of steak in it. Needless to say I'll be spreading the word about how bland and underwhelming this restaurant is. I won't be back.

    (1)
  • Jason S.

Food was excellent with great service. Menu selection was limited IMHO. Margaritas were good but weak on the tequila. Biggest downside was the noise... it was so loud we couldn't hold a decent conversation at the table. It was my first time there and the food was good enough that with the other negatives I will go back again.

  • Mike M.

I love me a good meal at Tortilla Marissa's! They have great food and great atmosphere, and I always see the parking lot full when driving by. I started going to Tortilla Marrissa's a while back, and their food has never disappointed. I ALWAYS get the make your own combo meal, and it's always a great pick. This option gives me a choice of almost half of their menu, just smaller quantities. I HAVE to say that you need to try the Portabella Mushroom burrito as part of the make your own combo. It doesn't say it on the menu, but you can switch up your burrito to almost any of the options that they have. And their portabella mushroom burrito is KEY to a happy tummy. I also always order a chile relleno (crispy of course) and mmm mm definitely a great choice as well. The atmosphere is always great, and they have a good happy hour special on margs.

I am not a fan of warm salsa but it is whatever. We did not care for the lack of flavor in the food. Service is good...so is the bread pudding.

    (2)
  • Melanie W.

Waitress was very nice and the Monday fajita for 2 dinner was only $15! That's crazy cheap, and still very delicious. The salsa was warm and yummy. I would definitely recommend this if you're in Fort Collins.

  • Matt D.

FIrst time at Tortilla Marissas's the environment and customer service was great, the warm salsa was a nice change as far as our meals they were tex mex, beans were over cooked everything else was just ok nothing great.

We have been enjoying this restaurant for 20 years. The menu has changed over the years and so have the people. but in our eyes the food is still outstanding as it always has been the service is excellent and the location is perfect. The pricing on the menu is appropriate and the quality and quantity of what is delivered is far above average compared to other restaurants in the area. I would highly recommend giving them a try we think it is an excellent restaurant with good staff good food and of course good margaritas. This isn't a franchise type restaurant it doesn't hold 300 people. It is a nice sized facility that is decorated well and is not A loud obnoxious restaurant. Enjoy we have for many years

Despite living in this town for almost as long as Tortilla Marissa's has been open, I hadn't ever tried it until recently when a friend chose it for her birthday dinner. Now I'm wondering why I have avoided it for so many years. Admittedly, Tex-Mex isn't my favorite style of Mexican food, but it is what it is and for what I know about the style (not much) I thought the things we tried were executed fairly well. So almost immediately upon arrival, a big basket of chips and salsa came to the table. I liked that the chips were very thin and crispy, and the salsa, while not spicy, was tasty enough. Even better, though, was the artichoke con queso. It had a great spicy kick (though one of my dining companions -- a Tortilla Marissa's regular -- commented on how spicy it was that night, so maybe I just lucked out) a lovely creamy texture, and lots of artichoke chunks. The artichokes were a little overwhelmed by the spice, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. For my entree, I tried the much-touted chile rellenos -- and yes, chile rellenos are the "standard" by which I judge Mexican restaurants. I would rate Tortilla Marissa's as A-OK ... not the best I've had, but nowhere near the worst, either. I prefer rellenos with a light, airy egg white batter, so the beer batter seemed a bit heavy to me (but way better than the breaded coating you will sometimes encounter). Also, for my taste, the cheese-to-chile ratio was slanted a bit too far toward the cheese. I should have chosen one of the meat stuffings, perhaps. Rice & beans were sort of meh, but how often do you actually get good rice and beans? Service was great, ambiance festive, food pretty good. A nice dining experience, all in all.

If you read my post before you'll see I didn't have a good experience or good food at all. I'm not surprised at a lot of these reviews or their recent closing for health issues

    (1)
  • CC T.

This place was seriously underwhelming. I went here expecting a more authentic feel but ended up getting meh tasting tex mex style food. The waitstaff was friendly and quick to serve us, and the bathrooms were clean but those were about the only positives. The margaritas we ordered had basically no alcohol in them, bad value for the price. Warm salsa was gross but that may just be a personal preference. The entrees we got were bland and arrived lukewarm, we had to add some of the salsa for spice. Overall it wasn't amazing food and was a bit too expensive for what it was. Also, a side note is that I thought once we left that I would be done with my meal but ended up getting sick and got to experience that wonderfully blah mix of flavors once again. This was a little while back (6months ago) but I'm reviewing it since I just started yelping more recently. Hopefully they have improved since then, but once a place makes me ill I tend to avoid giving it another chance you know?

We used to eat here all the time and moved away 10 years ago. Just pulled into town and this was number one on our list. We weren't disappointed, still just as delicious as we remembered! We've missed it so much.

This is one of those places that I had driven by I don't even know how many times before finally stopping in one day for lunch. It's a cute little eatery, right in the heart of town and actually has a more intimate interior than you might expect. I went during the lunch hour, I believe when they were having some special on. The place wasn't too crowded and I was seated immediately, but there were a good number of people enjoying the afternoon. The chips and salsa were quite good, with the interested and different practice of warm salsa. Not was I'm used to, but not bad either. I had a burrito lunch combo, which turned out to be very affordable and pretty tasty. Maybe it didn't make me sit up and shout "wow!", but as far as Mexican food in this town goes, not too bad. I'd recommend at least giving it a try.

Came for lunch with a co-worker - we split the fajita deal for two and had more than enough food - she took the rest home! The salsa they bring out is nice, and they refilled it for us as well. Dessert looks yummy, although a bit different than I am used to and I wish we'd had time and stomach space to try it - on my list for a return visit!

Chili Relleno tastes smokey, a little spicey but very good!! Mexican rice is moist and flavorful.

    (5)
  • Edward B.

Delicious house made chips and warm, medium-spiced salsa. Casual and friendly atmosphere, with a noise level low enough to enjoy conversation. Very accommodating and warm service from the moment I entered the restaurant. I recommend this spot if you are looking for authentic Mexican food, coupled with the sincere service that you see in Mexico. Really good!

Had the enchiladas del mar and the Santa Fe platter....fantastico! Great margarita selection, too

  • Amy K.

Always excellent service and food! Love the portobello mushroom fajitas! DELISH! The stacked enchiladas and tortilla flats are also amazing! With an increasingly busy schedule, I've done take out recently...fast, and still as good as eating in the restaurant!

Fantastic Mexican food. Fresh ingredients, not over seasoned and cooked just right. I had the crab and shrimp rellenos. It was awesome. I highly recommend this place.

Though we live in Florida, every time I go home to visit my family in Loveland, Tortilla Marissa's is on my list of places to eat. I love their chips and salsa, their steak burrito smothered in green chile is amazing and the sopapillas are to die for. I cannot brag on this restaurant enough....it is delicious and I have yet to find a Mexican restaurant anywhere in Florida that can even compare to the food I get at Tortilla Marissa's.

    (5)
  • Belinda L.

The margs are nice and tasty but I can't really say the same for the food. Now, the lover boy liked what he had but I thought my chimichanga tasted a lot like teriyaki beef covered by a tortilla. Mexican food shouldn't remind me of chinese food. The service was great which makes me want to give this place another try.

    (3)
  • Alden C.

The salsa is good! The Chile Rellenos are the best! You gotta try one of them! They are known for the Rellenos!

    (4)
  • Kim E.

Hands down this place has the best Chicken Rellenos I have ever had. I always get the relleno's whenever I go to a Mexican restaurant and have still been unable to find a relleno that can beat Tortilla Marissa's. The chips and salsa are made daily in the restaurant which explains why they are so good! I love to finish ny meal off with the Cinnamon Icecream...a real treat.

    (5)
  • Eddie G.

Worth about 1 1/2 star.. we ate the fajitas but they were a quite dry and unflavorful. Inca is right next door and probably more worth peoples while for food and drink specials. Plus, hours of operation could be much better.

    (1)
  • Byron C.

Nice ambiance, friendly staff. Warm salsa was terrible. The drinks were not cheap and were very weak. Very unimpressed with the food overall. The steak in my burrito tasted like beef jerky. Do not get the southwestern queso, its terrible.

    (2)
  • Steve K.

Very friendly, attentive, and quick staff/service...but the meal was average. We had the fajitas-carnitas and chicken soft tacos. The carnitas seemed more like BBQ pulled pork and chicken meat in the tacos did not have a lot seasoning/flavor. There are always a lot of factors that go into why you like a restaurant...for Mexican restaurants I can generally tell how I will like it based upon the chips and salsa. The chips served here seemed store-bought and we didn't care for the warmed salsa. I would come back for a bowl of the Yucatan soup...very good and flavorful.

    (2)
  • Chelsea A.

My favorite Mexican food. I love Tortilla Marissa's. The staff is friendly. Their margaritas are amazing! Their Chile rellenos are amazing. I would highly recommend Tortilla Marissa's!

    (5)
  • Steve F.

People who rave about certain Mexican restaurants should qualify themselves by letting readers know if they like Taco Bell. If they like Mexican fast food they don't know what good Mexican food is. Taco Bell is a step up from Marissa's. Like Taco Bell this IS NOT real Mexican food, nor is it tasty. It was horrible. I'm in the restaurant now, didn't finish my meal, and cannot wait to leave and eat a decent dinner.

    (1)
  • Cassandra S.

Although service was prompt and friendly the rice and flavors are generic. Food is overpriced but the portions are large. We will not be returning

    (2)
  • Ian J.

Kind of bland. Salsa was served warm which could be something traditional but it wasn't for me. Kind of overpriced for the quantity/quality.

  • Gina C.

Cinco de Mayo, visiting Ft. Collins, found this place on here. Short wait. Menu items looked really good. A friend got the artichoke dip. It was okay. Another friend and I split 2 3-item combo plates. The cheese enchilada, seafood poblano relleno and the smoked chicken anaheim relleno were the best. Ami also liked the chimi. Beth enjoyed her mahi-mahi. Most impressive was our server, Matt's, sparkling personality and the calzone-sized apple stuffed sopapilla. Overall, not bad, don't think I'd go back though only because there are other places to try.

    (3)
  • Kevin S.

Crispy beer batter chile relleno! Apple stuffed sopapilla (didn't they previously call it a cinnamon apple chimichanga?)! Great food.

    (4)
  • Reid P.

Very generous food portions, great flavor, and the price is good. Plus- we had a very nice server (Marcy). Will definitely be coming back when back in town.

    (4)
  • Marianne M.

The chicken flauta & the green chile were OK. As for the chips & salsa, the chips obviously came out of a bag & the salsa wasn't the style I normally like. I got what I paid for - cheap! Not recommended

Wow! Tortilla Marissa's is like a little hidden treasure for me right in the middle of Fort Collins! How come no one told me about this little gem?!?! Are you saving it all for yourselves? The only reason we ended up here is because they are marketing geniuses. They mailed my husband a free meal coupon for his birthday, very smart Marissa's! Ok, this place is so freakin' good that we ate dinner here two weekend nights in a row! Seriously, Friday AND Saturday night! I ordered one Chile Relleno with cheese and the spicy vegetarian green chile, this dish comes with vegetarian refried beans and rice. Love at first bite! Omigod, can't even take it, I love it here! It is not very often that a vegetarian gets great Mexican food - the green chile usually has pig in it and the refried beans usually have lard, sometimes the rice even has dead animal products in it but not at Tortilla Marissa's! My husband said the Mahi Mahi is delicious, he has tried three different entrees thus far and said everything has been wonderful. This little local eatery is clean, super cozy and comfortable, the service is good and the desserts are flippin' AMAZING! The fried ice cream, stop it! The jumbo sopapilla with cinnamon ice cream, slap your mama for not making this for you! And there are so many more to try! Tortilla Marissa's is now permanently added to our dining out rotation!

Overall, I like tortilla marissas. The house sauce is quite good as are their tortilla flats. The service is also very friendly.

Great service, but bland and unimpressive food. If you're looking for authentic, flavorful Mexican food, keep looking.

We came back to the Fort having been away for years. Wanted a really good Mexican food place for dinner, with good margaritas and good food. Someone recommended Tortilla Marissa's. They were dead on. The chili relleno with mesquite chicken was the best I have ever had. This place turns out to be just one of the best Mexican restaurants we have ever been to. Amazing. Our waitress was perfect. I would rate 10 out of 10 if possible.

I went here on a whim with my boyfriend because neither of us had ever been there. What a surprise! I loved every second of my experience the food was great and so was my margarita and we had a great server, it definetly exceeded my expectations I was surprised I had never heard of it before probably because there are sooo many mexican places in Fort Collins. I would definetly recommend this place!

  • Scott G.

New to Fort Collins we were anxious to find a good mexican restaurant. We didn't just find a good one, we found what we think is a great one. Starting with the chips and salsa and then having anything where we can get the artichoke con queso, we knew we had found our new favorite mexican restaurant. Been back again and again over the past month, we like it even better the next time around. Wait until the family gets here and tastes this! Love it!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
